LOVE 2 ASL

 PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT CENTER

"The interpreter scene prior to 1964 was so vastly different from that which exists today that it is a strain on the imagination to contemplate it ... We did not work as interpreters, but rather volunteered our services as our schedules permitted. If we received any compensation it was freely given and happily accepted, but not expected." - Lou Fant, RID biographer

Q & A - Questions & answers...

Q. I have a lot of questions, will you be able to answer ALL of my questions? First of all, your courses are a lot of money, how can I be sure I will get my monies worth?

A. I will do my best to answer all of your questions. I receive 50-75 emails a day from Alaska to Hawaii, from New York to Florida and everything inbetween. The bulk of emails come from California.

If you are not sure you want to spend the money in a multiple class course, its only $40-$50.00 to take one of the Love2ASL Professional Development Workshops and then you can see if my teaching style and your learning style is a good fit.

Q. I see that you have testimonials, but I would like to talk to the people myself, can you arrange that?

A. Put yourself in their place, would you want to share your phone number with dozens of people that want personal contact with you and they don't know you? Probably not, however, I can tell you that if I were to put their picture and testimony on my website without their permission, I could be sued.

Q. I can't really afford your workshops and is there anyway I can get a student discount?

A. I give a student discount, the workshops are normally, $50.00 and the student rate is $40.00.

Q How does the layaway plan work?

A. Just like in a department store layaway plan. You pay in advance, whatever your budget can afford and when you have paid the full amount you will be registered in the next course of your choice.

Q. What if I have an older edition of the books you are saying we need? Do I have to buy the latest edition?

A. We will use the book in the classroom, if you have an older edition, you will not be on the same page as the rest of us. Newer editions add information and all of the page numbers and chapters change. There will not be time in the class to wait for you to try and find the correct page and the older edition, may not even have that page.

Q. What materials do I need for your class?

A. The book(s) requested and a memory card to store your video taping.

Q. I really want to take your course but, I can't afford it. Isn't there someway that you can give me a discount?

A. That wouldn't be fair to the other students or to me. When you divide the number of hours into the cost, its very little for my time, knowledge and expertise. As an interpreter, I charge $90-$120.00 per hour. The layaway plan is meant exactly for this situation, pay as you can until you are paid in full.

Q. Are you the only instructor or will there be other instructors.

A. I am the owner/operator of Love2ASL.com. Proffesional Development Center, It's a small but effective program. I have over 40 years of interpreting experience at every level of interpreting. Community, Post-Secondary, Medical, Legal, Video Relay, and have been teaching ASL for over 25 years. Sometimes, I will have Deaf co-teachers at some of the Workshops whenever applicable.

Q. What happens if I pay and then

after a few classes, I decide its not the class I expected?

A. It is going to be very important for you to read through the information provided on the course or workshop page and see if it sounds like someting you want to invest your time and money in. Unfortunately there are no guarantees in life. If you have doubts, it is best not make a pledge or a decision that you know you are not going to be able to keep. It will not be the correct learning environment for you or the other participants if you are not fully committed to the program. The Love2ASL.com return policy is listed under the Events Menu, sub menu, "Accomadations and Refund Policy"

Q. I am currently unemployed, but I really need to take this course so I can take the certification and move on into a better paying position.

A. I understand where you are coming from and it sounds like you have a lot going on. It might be better if you spend your energy finding a job so that you will be able to afford the course that you need to move you into the place you want to be. If you are struggling to make it to class and to pay for the class, you might not get the full benefit of the course.

Q. I am really struggling with how much you charge for your course. It seems like a lot of money and with the economy being so bad, I think it needs to be more affordable.

A. I couldn't agree with you more, the economy is bad for everyone, the operating costs are going up while the economy is going down, that is the reason we keep the class size under 12 to ensure you are getting the best setting that is the most conducive to your learning. Most courses fill 50-100 seats and you get zero, one-to-one attention.

Q. I have taken a lot of ASL, I, II, III. I am confused about what I should do next? How will I know I am ready to go to an ITP?

A. Your instructor should be able to give you some feedback as to what you should do next. If that isn't happening, or you want a second opinion, we can help you with that. We can provide you with an assessment of your skills and create a goal plan for what path you need to be on. Go to interpreter support and networking, subtab: Assessments and Evaluations.

Q. If I change my mind and want to withdraw from your can I get a refund?

A. Unlike public education, Love2ASL is a privately owned and run professional development center. Please read prior to registration our Non-Refund Policy, go to the events calendar, look for the subtab, Refund policy.

Q. I really want to attend your AMP course, my friend took it and she improved so much I am feeling left behind. I am in a wheel chair is that a problem?

A. Currently we maintain 3 offices on the second floor and this building is not required by code to maintain an elevator. We are always looking for offices on the ground floor. Check back with us peridoically for access.

Q. Five hours makes for a long day, can you shorten it to 3 or 4 hours? I get very tired of sitting for too long.

A. It's a long day for all of us, however, what I have found is, when adding up the cost of gas, time, travel, babysitters, being away from your family, etc. longer days mean shorter classes. So instead of coming 6 times you only have to come 5 times and for folks who drive in from Santa Barbara, Indio, and Santa Rosa, they really appreciate everyone's patience with an additonal hour or so.

Q. I notice that other general educational classes give refunds, that only seems fair.

A. Other's registration fees, application fees, service fees, student fees, health fees, tuition, parking fees, labs, supplies, the mandatory 3-4 books per class fees and so on. We charge only one fee for the course.
