PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT CENTER
"The interpreter scene prior to 1964 was so vastly different from that which exists today that it is a strain on the imagination to contemplate it ... We did not work as interpreters, but rather volunteered our services as our schedules permitted. If we received any compensation it was freely given and happily accepted, but not expected." - Lou Fant, RID biographer

Research shows that classes limited between 8-20 students have been proven to be highly conducive for an excellent learning environment. We personally find 8 to be the best learning environment. All classes will be limited to 8 participants and now fewer than 4 participants for the best interactive learning environment.

Do You Know the
EIPA Guidelines of Professional Conduct for Educational Interpreters?
Below are excerpts
from the EIPA Guidelines of Professional Conduct
~The educational interpreter shall either interpret or participate in meetings such as staff meetings, IEP meetings, and staffing, but should not do "BOTH"
~Learning to use an interpreter is an essential aspect of development of a student who is deaf and/or hard of hearing.
~The interpreter's goal is to facilitate communication between deaf and hearing people and to communicate clearly what each individual says.
~In order to be respected as a member of the educational team, and to provide students with access to the classroom, interpreters should be improving their skills and knowledge continually.
~An interpreter can produce a better interpretation when prepared or when knowledgeable about the topic area.
~The Deaf or hard of hearing student should be allowed the freedom to make choices and to learn independently as possible.
Dear Juti
Here is what I found on the RID website... regarding the EIPA Certification.
In regard to the EdK-12 as well as the following:
EIPA Interpreters Joining RID…
Interpreters who have passed the EIPA written test and scored at
least a 4.0 on the EIPA performance test may now join RID as certified
members and maintain certification through the RID Certification
Maintenance Program (CMP) and Ethical Practices System (EPS).
New and current members of RID who wish to do so must use the
Membership application or call the RID national office at 703-838-0030.
The EIPA written test is very different from the NIC
Generalist in that the entire test is taking the "general knowledge" from
the "classroom interpreting website" and applying it to scenarios, so the
entire test is "scenarios". "what would you do"...."what if" etc....
The EIPA written is only given at certain times during the year and I took mine
at LA Unified at the "spur of the moment. You have to check their website for
the next test dates.
Hope this is helpful.

K.A.
