PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT CENTER
"The interpreter scene prior to 1964 was so vastly different from that which exists today that it is a strain on the imagination to contemplate it ... We did not work as interpreters, but rather volunteered our services as our schedules permitted. If we received any compensation it was freely given and happily accepted, but not expected." - Lou Fant, RID biographer

Deaf and Hearing Students working toward becoming certified.
Are you thinking about becoming a Deaf interpreter? Want to become "certified? and don't know how?
You will need to study and prepare to take the CDI written test. After you pass the CDI written then you will be eligibile to take the CDI performance test. After passing both CDI tests you will be a "certified" deaf interpreter.
1. You must qualify to take the written test, The first qualification is, you must be Deaf or HH and have a Doctor's or Adiologists verification of hearing loss.
2. You must have 8 hours of RID Code of Professional Conduct training.
3. You must have 8 hours training in the Role and function of a Deaf interpreter.
Go to the Menu and look for CDI - FYI =================================>
After you qualify, you need to begin preapre to take the written test.
Next you will need to prepare for the performance test.
Deaf interpreters work side by side with Hearing interpreter in a team effort to facilitate communication between a hearing consumer and a deaf consumer. The important difference to take notice is...
Deaf interpreters have a special skill set that Hearing interpreters do not have... an understanding that goes beyond what Hearing interpreters are able to understand. Deaf interpreters pick up where Hearing interpreters stop and finish the job!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If you meet the initial qualifications,
Have a Doctor's or Audiological report of hearing loss...
and want to begin to prepare to become a CDI...
Please Email your request to take classes that will help you to be ready for the CDI written and the CDI performance.
